Paper may be recyclable safely what about ink in newsprint?

Respuesta

Dear Ray,

This is a subject of some debate. Ink in newspapers is quite safe but, in a world where newsprint is recycled, about 85% I believe, there is always a discussion on the suitability of old newsprint for the production of food wrapping. The industry has significant controls over this, using barrier coatings, or virgin firbre grades for food use, and I dont think there is any serious or significant risk. however, in a world where recycling is increasing, there needs to be constant vigilance about the risk of contamination arising from any product that has been through a previous manufacturing processes.

The question really is; are manufacturers ensuring that their raw materials are completely clean and fit for purpose. And that depends very much on what is being made.
